DVD Review: The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall And Felt Superbad About It (2010)
Creatively speaking, tragically the rip-off title The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall And Felt Superbad About It is the only mildly comedic thing about this woefully unfunny, horrifically abysmal spoof of Judd Apatow’s blockbuster comedies.
Of course, when you’re mining from Apatow’s unique terrain of humor derived from bodily functions, chances are you’re going to hit the bottom of the toilet bowl pretty fast which is exactly what happens within moments of this utterly disgusting straight-to-disc disaster from Saving Ryan’s Privates director Craig Moss.
Leaving no gross-out comedy out of the game, Moss and his MadTV cast tries to lampoon everything and the kitchen sink ranging from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to Twilight while also playing off Apatow’s predecessors The Farrelly Brothers and going so far as to borrow gags from Rob Schneider movies, TV commercials and video games.
However, their quest to throw everything on celluloid and hope that something sticks or at the very least causes a grin fails miserably. For, aside from the initial novelty and hope that we may be in for an intelligent ribbing of Apatow’s brand of humor results instead into something that could best be described as a student film imitation of his most memorable moments with absolutely none of the flair for the funny, which should be avoided at all costs.
